For anyone out there who has tasted meal-replacement drinks made especially for diabetics, the thick chalky consistency and the aftertaste of these drinks probably has deterred them from ever trying one again. But then came Enterex .

Our reviewers found that Enterex tastes like a normal milkshake and that it had no aftertaste. In fact, it even passed the “kid test”! (Parents of children under 3 years old should ask their pediatricians before allowing them to drink it.)

Enterex comes in three flavors: Creamy Vanilla, Tempting Chocolate (safe for people allergic to chocolate) and Luscious Strawberry. Enterex is a balanced nutritional drink formulated especially for people living with diabetes or desiring a reduced sugar intake.

It is sweetened with sucralose (Splenda brand) instead of aspartame, saccharin, fructose or sugar. Simple carbohydrates like sugar are absorbed quickly, causing abrupt blood sugar elevations. Similarly, fructose is associated with an increase in triglycerides, and therefore is not recommended for diabetics.

Sucralose doesn’t alter one’s glycemic index and has no known side effects. Thus, the sweetener in Enterex helps people living with diabetes maintain normal blood sugar levels. In addition, Enterex contains no preservatives, lactose, or gluten.

It is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and has no trans fat; it is made with canola and high-oleic safflower oils, both of which are monounsaturated fats and are high in omega-3 fatty acids (which can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce high blood pressure).

High-oleic safflower oil is known to reduce cholesterol and to play a critical role in preventing coronary artery disease. Rich in fiber, vitamins, antioxidants and high-quality protein, this drink is jam packed with health stuff. It satisfies hunger and helps reduce excessive eating.

That’s why it’s also a good choice for anyone interested in controlling their sugar intake and managing their weight. It is a great substitute for breakfast and makes a healthful light lunch or snack.

Published in the January–February 2004 Nutrition Week edition of JPEN, the study produced positive results for Enterex compared to Ensure. Tested with a group of 10 to 18-year-old adolescents, some had type two diabetes and others metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes).

The study by the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University showed that compared to Ensure, Enterex resulted in lower glucose levels and greater corrected insulin response and glucose tolerance in all groups, indicating a better glycemic response.

The study was conducted by M.L. Christensen, PharmD, G. Burghen, MD, P. Velasquez-Meier, MD, all from University of Tennessee, Memphis, Tenn, and J. Sinclair-Pingel, PharmD of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. The study was funded by a government grant.

Participants in the study were required to fast overnight. The next day, each consumed 237 mL of – either Ensure or Enterex . Blood samples were analyzed for glucose and insulin over a three-hour period.

Comparison of the two supplements within each group found a lower peak glucose concentration with Enterex in all groups.

Enterex is a meal replacement targeted at people with diabetes who need to control their glucose levels. But it’s also an excellent meal replacement for those who don’t have the time to enjoy a regular meal.

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions, affecting near nearly 20 million Americans, with another 20 million with undiagnosed pre-diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that one-third of all children born in 2000 will get Type 2 Diabetes.

According to the American Diabetes Association, 18 million people in the United States have diabetes. An estimated 13 million have been diagnosed with diabetes while 5 million are unaware they have the disease.

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) the estimated 20 million people with pre-diabetes can halt the progression to diabetes and even turn back the clock on the road to type 2 diabetes with good nutrition.
